DJ VenessaMichaels Shares Tips on Squeezing Workouts Into a Busy Schedule & Her Pump-Up Playlist



With a full-time gig that involves igniting the turn-up in cities across the country, San Diego-bred, Los Angeles-based DJ VenessaMichaels makes the most of her down-time. The music junkie, who started DJing at 18 after learning vinyl and being encouraged by her mother, realized that leading an active lifestyle helped boost her energy on the road.

“Traveling got me to realize I need to start working out because I wasn’t as energetic as I was when I was younger and didn’t really need to work out,” says Michaels, who tries to work out at least three times a week. “I started traveling and was just worn out, but when you keep active and maintain [a workout schedule of] at least a half hour a day then it works out much better.”

While she prefers getting in a stair workout at a dog park close to her home near Sunset Boulevard, her on-the-road fitness tip is simply YouTubing routines to tighten her midsection. “I wear a lot of crop tops so I feel like it’s kind of important,” she laughs when explaining her love for ab workouts. “I usually just YouTube “ab workout” and click on the first thing that pops up.” She also taps her phone as a fitness resource by utilizing the free app, 30 Day Ab Challenge.

Her DJ skills also come in handy when piecing together a cardio-ready playlist. Her dance mixes, like this fiery HLZBLZ set, stock up on EDM jams and jersey club remixes of pop culture favorites like Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” and Ghost Town DJ’s “My Boo.” She explains, “[The songs are] super up-tempo, fast-paced and kind of repetitive so it gets you really in the mood to work out, and be excited and energized.”

The most important soundtrack, though, is her mental stance on body image. “I completely believe body image comes from inside and finding a passion for what you love to do,” she offers. “I think that when you’re healthy and eat eight and your body feels good, your mind is gonna feel good and that’s the most important thing.”
