On Saturday (June 11), girls will run New York at The Other Festival. As the city’s first all-female festival, the lineup is stacked with girl bosses of all levels.
From catwalk queen Naomi Campbell and Black Girls Rock founder Beverly Bond to Rihanna’s Fenty Corp design director Melissa Battifarano and yoga guru Elena Brower, the one-day event will feature empowering panels and insightful one-on-ones aiming to help and inspire up-and-coming entrepreneurs. There will also be a musical extravaganza following the event with sets from Sophie Beem, Vashtie and Justine Skye.
“This is really about women who create,” Other Fest founder Dee Poku tells her sweat. “We have musicians who make music but we also have makers who create and creators who drive.”
Poku is no stranger to juggling multiple hustles. As the CEO of the WIE Network (Women Inspiration and Enterprise), the former Hollywood studio executive also helms the marketing consultant company Right Angle while being a mom and also planning a WIE retreat for high-achieving women in October.
“I give myself space,” Poku says, offering her major key to balancing a heavy workload with her personal life. “Plan out your time, your days and the structure of your life in a way that allows you to do multiple things.”
While Poku admits that she needs to get better at setting aside “me” time, she meditates and takes a hike with a BFF to prevent burn out. “Meditation definitely helps. It’s equivalent to a good night’s sleep — you just need that clear head space and the answers come,” she explains. “I also do these power walks once in a while with one of my oldest friends. We just go on these long hikes and run through the different elements in our lives and just kind of download. It’s great because we can give each other feedback and be honest about where we are and what we’re going through.”
